I’ve run SEO programs through every big shift, from Panda to Penguin, Mobilegeddon to Core Web Vitals, and now the AI-search era.

And, I’m afraid to tell you that in 2026, the margin for sloppy, ineffective execution is razor-thin. Because SEO is shifting at a breakneck speed. Everything I knew about SEO a few years ago doesn’t apply now, and search is turning smarter, more conversational, and more discerning. 

Long story short: every digital marketing services company needs to pull their socks up and quickly adapt before it’s too late. And, the first thing they must do is to identify the SEO mistakes to avoid in 2026 at any cost.

Below are the 15 common SEO mistakes 2026 I see teams still making, and exactly how I avoid them now. 

1) Optimizing only for the 10 blue links, not for AI answers

If I only structure pages for traditional snippets, I lose visibility where users start: AI Overviews/AI Mode. 

One of the most common SEO errors to avoid is not optimizing for the content for AIO and LLMs. I now front-load concise, sourced explanations, add scannable steps, and surface unique expertise that earns inclusion and clicks when Google shows AI-generated summaries with links. 

Treat every key page like it must answer the core question in 2–4 tight paragraphs plus supportive assets (tables, checklists, data visuals). Google itself says AI experiences display links and create new ways to surface sources: optimize to be that source.

There’s a difference between AI content and AI-generated content, and this is exactly where most digital marketing services companies trip.

  • Use schema intentionally: Article, Product, Organization, Breadcrumb, Review—kept accurate; I don’t promise deprecated rich results.

  • Guard the domain: No low-supervision third-party posting; enforce editorial standards to avoid site reputation abuse.

  • Be crawl-smart, not crawl-cute: Fix duplication and orphaning; don’t misuse robots.txt in place of noindex.

  • Ship reference assets: Data studies, pricing matrices, calculators—these attract both links and AI citations.
